Rain boots become multi-purpose for snow and cold weather.
New York City is on the East Coast and therefore we have extremes of all seasons: a very cold winter and a very hot summer. The main mode of transportation in New York City is to walk. Therefore, we have to be prepared for all types of weather! My walk to school alone is 20 minutes, so rain boots are essential for keeping my feet and pants dry. In the winter when it snows, rain boots can also be useful! I have also noticed others wearing the little ankle rain boots as regular shoes, even when the weather does not call for it.
Lace-up rain boots have become a very popular fashion statement, elevating the rainboot to a new level, making them about fashion as well as function. The lace-up rugged style of rain bootscan also be seen in the wellie and hunter-inspired boots, which lace up and also have leather accents. These boots were originally made to be used for all sorts of outdoor activity, but are often worn in the city where there is a major lack of nature. These boots that were often worn out of necessity for outdoorsy types are now worn for fashion on the streets.
